In 1969, Karen and Richard Carpenter signed to A&M Records and released their debut album. Forty years later, the Carpenters are recognized not only as the most successful brother-sister act in music history and one of the best-selling acts of all-time but also as a pop culture phenomenon that continues to resonate today. Celebrating that legacy, the two-CD 40/40 (A&M/UMe), released October 20, 2009, produced by Richard Carpenter, brings together 40 of the duo’s greatest hits and best-loved recordings, each digitally remastered.
40/40 includes all of the Carpenters’ dozen Top 10 Pop hits, 19 of their 20 Top 40s and 23 of their 28 Top 75 Pop singles, from 1969’s cover of the Beatles’ “Ticket To Ride” to 1981’s CThose Good Old Dreams.” Among the 17 other tracks are covers of Leon Russell’s classic “This Masquerade,” Hank Williams’ “Jambalaya (On The Bayou)” and Tim Hardin’s “Reason To Believe,” and a pair of recordings originally released in 1983, following Karen’s passing earlier that year, “Now” and “Your Baby Doesn’t Love You Anymore.”
The Carpenters’ hit streak began with “(They Long To Be) Close To You” in 1970, which stayed at #1 on the charts for four weeks. Over the next four years, they reached #2 or #3 with such gems as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “For All We Know,” “Rainy Days And Mondays,” Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett’s “Superstar,” “Hurting Each Other” b/w “Bless The Beasts And Children” (featured in producer/director Stanley Kramer’s film of the same name), the “Sesame Street” anthem “Sing” and “Yesterday Once More.” In 1973 they snared a #1 with “Top Of The World” and the following year their third #1, a re-imagining of The Marvelettes’ “Please Mr. Po stman.” Added to four multiplatinum albums, one platinum album, and a 1973 singles collection that reached seven times platinum, the Carpenters had become the best-selling American act of the Seventies.
Change and experimentation followed, including “All You Get From Love Is A Love Song,” “Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft” and a Top 10 Country hit with Juice Newton’s “Sweet, Sweet Smile.” 1981’s “Touch Me When We’re Dancing,” from their last contemporaneous album, became their final Top 40 hit.
In recent years, artists from Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and Shania Twain to Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Madonna have noted Karen Carpenter’s influence on their careers. And when 40/40 was released earlier this year in Japan, the collection quickly shot to #1 and gold certification. The popularity of the Carpenters continues to grow 40 years after they had just begun.

Billboards are a part of the landscape of the Sunset Strip, and we are continuing our tradition of honoring and supporting great creativity by the outdoor community.”
Rick Robinson the West Coast GM/National Creative Director for MacDonald Media, has put together an esteemed panel of judges who will rank all entries based on creativity and strength of original concept, overall art direction and implementation. Panelists include: Robbie Conal, Guerilla Poster Artist, Los Angeles, CA, Huw Griffith, CEO North America M&C SAATCHI, Los Angeles, CA, Rob Jackson, Principal/Creative Director, Extra Credit Projects, Grand Rapids, MI, Ralph Lee, CEO & Executive Creative Director, ARS NOVA INC, Los Angeles, CA, Jim Lesser, Executive Creative Director, BBDO West, San Francisco, CA, Man One, Artist/Gallery Director, Crewest Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, Michael Perdigao, President/Advertising & Corporate Communication, Roll International, Los Angeles, CA, Steffan Postaer, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, Euro RSCG, Chicago, IL, Sean Robertson, VP Creative Director, CBS Outdoor-West, San Francisco, CA.

As preparations are being made for this year’s VOODOO EXPERIENCE, Rehage Entertainment, in association with the Life is Art Foundation | KK Projects, has announced it will debut a series of large scale, interactive art installations throughout the picturesque City Park venue. The exhibition will be displayed October 30-November 1 during the annual weekend that celebrates music, as well as New Orleans’ bohemian culture, arts and cuisine.
This expansion further defines Voodoo as a culture extending far beyond what is happening on stage.
More than 20 local and international artists will create large scale site-specific pieces utilizing the landscape of the Voodoo Experience festival grounds. The interactive, multi-sensory experience will be curated by Life Is Art Foundation | KK Projects’ Kirsha Kaechele and VOODOO founder and producer Stephen Rehage; overall exhibition themes for the pieces include “Natural Order,” “Homage to an Unseen Intelligence” and the “Louisiana Wetlands.”
“All of the VOODOO installations will represent the betterment of humanity and the intelligent use of the earth's resources through a sustainable collaboration with nature,” says Kaechele.
“We look at the festival’s production as being a work of art, so this feels like a natural extension,” Rehage adds.“With the city’s art community flourishing, this seemed like a good time for VOODOO to honor another aspect of New Orleans’ culture in an interactive way.”
Some of the highlights include Hammock Mother, a giant hammock constructed to hold 30 festival-goers; it is currently being woven by the Zapara tribe in the remote upper Amazon, an indigenous, shamanic culture battling extinction. The hammock will utilize the native approach to architecture juxtaposed against the 90 degree-based modern building structure and serves to highlight the contrast in our understandings of nature and the importance of developing systems based on collaboration with nature. The piece serves to illustrate how our approach to building can be informed by evolving our methods to incorporate ecological systems such as symbiosis, adaptation and natural efficiency. Also look for Obelisk, a 30-foot functional analemmatic sundial that will reacquaint viewers with the simple movement of the sun and time.At nightfall, the illuminated beacon will serve as an interactive, communal meeting place.
Additionally, in order to expand the VOODOO EXPERIENCE celebration with the neighborhood, Rehage Entertainment and Life is Art Foundation | KK Projects’ are in discussions with the New Orleans Film Festival and the Mid City Neighborhood Organizations, City Park and NOMA officialsto present a series of additional interactive art experiences on the front lawn of the New Orleans Museum of Art--all free and open to the public. These offerings include an outdoor cinema, a giant piñata (to be broken open Halloween night) and a neighborhood trick-or-treat performance event.
R.E.M. will release a brand-new double live album, entitled R.E.M. Live At The Olympia on October 27th, 2009 on Warner Bros. Records. The two-CD set, produced by Jacknife Lee, features 39 songs that capture the best moments from the band’s “working rehearsals” at Dublin’s fabled Olympia club during which singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills tested out new songs for R.E.M.’s 2008 studio album Accelerate.
Live At The Olympia ventures back to July 2007 when R.E.M. set up camp at the venerable Olympia Theatre in Ireland's capital city and tested new material over five nights before fired-up, capacity crowds comprised of fan-club members, friends, family, and fans from all over the world who were privy to R.E.M.'s so-called “experiment in terror,” as guitarist Peter Buck puts it. “We were just trying to do something we hadn't done before," Buck says, "which meant there was no relaxing during the set. Every second we were playing something we didn't know all that well. Which was kind of good — there were all kinds of terror elements going on during that show."
Live At The Olympia gives fans that were unable to attend the Irish shows a chance to hear different incarnations of the songs before they were recorded in their finalAccelerate versions, such as the singles “Man-Sized Wreath” and an early version of “Supernatural Superserious” under its original title “Disguised.” As a bonus, the band has included two songs: “On The Fly” and “Staring Down The Barrel Of The Middle Distance,” that were only performed live and were not included on Accelerate. In addition, the package features many early R.E.M. favorites from the band’s albumsMurmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, and Life’s Rich Pageant.
Live At The Olympia will be released in several configurations including a standard double CD, featuring 39 tracks and liner notes by author and music journalist Andy Gill, as well as a CD + DVD, which includes concert and backstage footage shot by noted French filmmakers Vincent Moon and Jeremiah. Moon, who has worked with Arcade Fire, The Shins, and The National, along with Jeremiah, shot all the footage that R.E.M. posted on its various websites connected to Accelerate last year. Finally, fans will be able to purchase Live At The Olympia digitally from all online service providers beginning October 27th.
The track-listing for R.E.M. Live At The Olympia is as follows:

Cash has accepted this invitation to return to Nashville to showcase The Listat an event co-hosted by the Museum and Broadcast Music, Inc. [BMI] as a way to honor her father Johnny’s legacy, as well as to pay tribute to the artists whose songs she re-interprets, and to the songs themselves. Each song was written or popularized by a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame or by an artist who seems destined for that honor. Most of the songs are licensed by BMI.
The List features Cash’s contemporary interpretations of 12 classic songs culled from a list of essential country tunes that Johnny gave her in 1973, and filtered through her own unique perspective. Produced and arranged by Grammy Award winner John Leventhal (Cash’s husband), the album includes Cash’s covers of songs written and/or recorded by The Carter Family (“Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow”), Hank Williams (“Take These Chains From My Heart”), Jimmie Rodgers (“Miss The Mississippi and You”), Hank Cochran/Patsy Cline (“She’s Got You”), Merle Haggard (“Silver Wings”), and Bob Dylan (“Girl From the North Country,” famously done by Dylan and Johnny Cash in 1969).
“I could not think of a more perfect union of entities to launch The List than myself, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which is the repository and protector of so many important treasures and artifacts of my family, and BMI, my performing-rights organization for the past 35 years, which comprises my entire life as a songwriter,” Cash says. “The songs on The Listare the very songs that BMI and the Hall of Fame exist to honor, share, archive, and perpetuate. I am thrilled to premiere The List with the family-like support of both organizations, in a city where these songs have never faded in relevancy.”
“Rosanne’s new collection is as cutting edge and deeply personal as anything she has ever recorded,” says Museum Director Kyle Young. “By making them her own, she has made each of these historically important songs sound newly minted. With her quicksilver, drop-dead voice and careful interpretation of thesegolden standards, Rosanne gives us proof positive that the past has meaning in the present. As we endeavor to preserve the many chapters of country music’s evolving history so that new generations can understand and benefit from its cultural importance, we welcome Rosanne Cash as country-music royalty. We are honored to join BMI in presenting Rosanne’s premiere performance of music from The List.”
“This project combines a great BMI artist, Rosanne, and timeless songs with the blessing of Johnny Cash,” says Jody Williams, BMI’s vice president of writer-publisher relations. “This significant slice of BMI’s repertoire is cast in the most respectful and artistic light, so we’re very proud to be involved.”
