Michael Jackson's "This Is It" Opens Tonight

October 28, 2009

Paul McCartney has written an original song, (I Want To) Come Home," for the upcoming Miramax Films release Everybody’s Fine, starring Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell.

After attending an early screening of the film, McCartney felt a deep connection to the material and began writing the song that very night.

Everybody's Fine, written and directed by Kirk Jones ("Waking Ned Devine"), is the story of  a widower (Robert De Niro) who embarks on an impromptu road trip to reconnect with each of his grown children only to discover that their lives are far from picture perfect.

Collaborating with composer Dario Marianelli on the orchestrations, McCartney has crafted an intimate song that compliments the themes of the film and serves as a final grace note to the moving story.

Reflecting on his reaction to the film, McCartney said, “I could definitely identify with Robert De Niro’s character because I have grown-up kids who have their own families.”

Miramax Films will release Everybody's Fine in theaters nationwide on December 4.

VH1 will present the world premiere of the music video for Norah Jones’ “Chasing Pirates,” which debuts online at VH1.com today Tuesday, October 27, and will air on VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown at 9AM ET on Saturday, October 31. “Chasing Pirates” is the lead single from Jones’ highly anticipated upcoming album The Fall, which will be released by EMI’s Blue Note Records on November 17.

The video, which was shot in Jones’ hometown of New York City, was directed by Rich Lee, who has worked on the visual effects for all three of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Lee has also directed music videos by everyone from Fergie (“Clumsy”) to Michael Buble (“Haven’t Met You Yet”). Click HERE for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the video.

Jones has also announced a first run of TV appearances around the release of The FallThe multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter will be appearing on CBS Late Show With David Letterman(November 11), Comedy Central The Colbert Report (November 18), and ABC Good Morning America(November 16) and The View (November 23).

Chasing Pirates,” which was featured on Rolling Stone’s “Hot List,” immediately announces a new direction for Jones. Entertainment Weekly wrote that “’Chasing Pirates’ is a bluesy surprise and welcome change of pace,” adding that “Jones’ voice remains as lovely as ever.”

"For this record, I just had a sound in my head," Jones says. "I wanted the grooves to be more present and heavy. And I also just wanted to do something different." That new sound began to present itself on one of the first songs Jones wrote for the project. "About a year ago, I did some demos in my home studio," she says. "I had some friends come in and we figured out a cool arrangement for 'Chasing Pirates,' with a cool drum part. It went somewhere I didn't expect it to go, and that became a direction to look in."

The Fall finds Jones experimenting with a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris. King also helped Jones put together a new group of musicians to perform on the album, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer).

Robert Pattinson Owes Edward Cullen's Cool To James Dean

This is a great piece On Robert Pattinson from MTV.com.

With his signature hairstyle, brooding good looks and angsty teen movie role,Robert Pattinson has certainly solidified himself as a teen heartthrob. Half a century before Pattinson hit the screen, James Dean was firing up the passions of young ladies with his own signature locks, brooding good looks and angsty teen movie role. Naturally, it was Dean's style that Pattinson looked to when he needed inspiration to play Edward Cullen in "Twilight."

" 'Rebel Without a Cause' was a big influence on the first ['Twilight' film] — it influenced the hairdo and stuff," Pattinson told USA Today. "In lots of ways, it has a very similar character arc: An everyday girl brings this relatively strange individual out of his slump."  Read more>>

Any band these days would love to sell a million records, but for U2, that high number is not enough. The multi-platinum rockers told the Associated Press that they're displeased with the sales of their latest album, 'No Line on the Horizon.' Recent U2 albums have been selling in the three to four million range, while 'No Line' has only broken the million mark.Bono and company see factors such as the lack of a hit song and the fickle public's need for a "diet of pop" are contributing to this so-called slump.

"We weren't really in that mindset," Bono said about the lack of a commercial hit from 'No Line.' "We felt that the album was a kind of an almost extinct species, and we should approach it in totality and create a mood and a feeling, and a beginning, middle and an end. And I suppose we've made a work that is a bit challenging." Read more>>

John Mayer Contest-advertisment

Contributor/friend Anne M. Raso just checked in to tell us that Bobby Long's show at New York's Bitter End last night was one of his best in the Big Apple yet and if you can, check out his show tonight at Arlene's Grocery 10/25. Bobby seems to be playing in town about once a month now and every show seems to be sold out. He is recording as we go to press (they can't announce what major label he will be on yet) and some of you might have caught him walking around the Fifth Avenue MAC store Saturday afternoon.

If you saw a tall, cute Brit with beard stubble seeming perplexed that the store is literally a glad bubble in the ground, that was Bobby! We noticed there were more guys it he audience than usual (usually it's 90 per cent female), which is a good sign. Apparently, a lot of female famines are turning their boyfriends on to Bobby's neo-folk/troubadour sound. I checked it with Bobby quickly after last night's performance at the Bitter End, got a quick peck on the cheek and a "thank you for coming" and wish I could make tonight's performance but can't. In case you die-hard Bobby Long fans are wondering why he was NOT signing CDs and shirts back at the merchandise stand at the Bitter End, it was because he had to race off to do a radio interview at 10PM. More Bobby news coming up next month, but for now here's a pic of Bobby and I taken about a month ago at Arlene's Grocery by his publicist (and my good friend) Sharon Weisz. (Get to Arlene's Grocery before 7 because all the spaces on the floor quickly fill up for Bobby's performances. Also, check out my half-page piece on him in FACES PRESENTS NEW MOON FEVER (FACES HOLIDAY 2009) on sale at newsstands everywhere now!

Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Story Behind The Song is famed publisher’s first all-celebrity release

Musicians love to say that every song tells a story, but they are usually tight-lipped about the story behind the song. Was it really scribbled on a napkin? What love interest was the real inspiration? If we knew the real story behind our favorite songs, would we ever listen to them the same way again?

Chicken Soup for the Soul® has partnered with veteran Hollywood publicist, talent manager and celebrity booker Jo-Ann Geffen for the first all celebrity book from the top selling brand. Geffen peels back the curtain on 101 songs, songwriters and artists with the upcoming release of Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Story Behind the Song (Chicken Soup for the Soul, LLC, November 10, 2009, 978-1-935096-40-5, $14.95). Jo-Ann Geffen is credited as editor along with Chicken Soup for the Soul co-founders Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. The foreword is by Lamont Dozier, who is credited as an architect of the Motown sound.

The book reflects on many of our favorite songs that trace our lives through music from rap trendsetter Kanye West to Top 40 hit-makers Richie Sambora, Christina Aguilera, Melissa Etheridge, John Legend, the Backstreet Boys’ Howie Dorough, and Jewel, classic rock performer/songwriters like Chicago’s Robert Lamm, and Foreigner’s Mick Jones,  Daryl Hall and John Oates, alternative rockers Aaron Lewis of Staind to Corey Taylor of Slipknot and legendary  punk rock  hits such as Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation” and Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains reflecting on his father’s tour in Vietnam and its  aftermath in “Rooster,  pop classics like those of  Barry Manilow, Hal David, Diane Warren and Paul Anka who re-tells his history with Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, R&B songmasters such as Nathan Morris for the Boyz II Men/Mariah Carey hit “One Sweet Day”, Walter Orange of the Commodores, Smokey Robinson, Earth Wind and Fire’s Philip Bailey, and country hits from Tracy Lawrence, .Ray Stevens, Pam Tillis.

Some bring laughter, others bring tears, but all are insightful and great reading for music fans, aficionados or people who just like a good story. Each of the tales is accompanied by a photo and the lyrics for the song that is discussed.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing, LLC, publishes all the latest titles in the famous Chicken Soup for the Soul book series which are distributed through Simon and Schuster, Inc. Since 1993, books in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series have sold more than 112 million copies, with titles translated into more than 40 languages. Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing also licenses the right to use its famous trademark to high quality licensees through IMG, the world's premier licensing agent. The company is currently implementing a plan to expand into all media, is working with TV networks on several TV shows and is developing a major Internet presence dedicated to life improvement, emotional support and inspiration.  In 2007, USA Todaynamed Chicken Soup for the Soul one of the five most memorable and impactful books in the last quarter century. Attendees were able to purchase signed poster artwork from the artists while enjoying music from DJs DJ &mall Change (Friday) and DJ Ody Roc (Saturday).

“What a night! I had just arrived back in the country, and if there is a better way to get back into the swing of NYC than to go to the Art of Rebellion opening, I don't know what it is,” said Tara McPherson. “Surrounded by great art and artists as well as amazing fans, it was such a fun event all based around the rock and roll vibe of Harley-Davidson motorcycles." “Art of Rebellion NYC was well-attended with lots of good stuff to look at--it offered something a little different,” said Frank Kozik. “We’re thrilled people are coming out to see these artists who embody the rebellious spirit we connect with,” said Susanne Dawursk, Harley-Davidson director of Outreach Marketing. “The Art Of Rebellion will be an on-going event supporting artists and the art community at large.”

Give a cheer for TV’s hottest, funniest and most talked-about new series when “Glee” Season 1: Road To Sectionals debuts on DVD December 29 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Filled with beloved characters and sensational musical numbers, “Glee” Season 1: Road To Sectionals is an electrifying, pitch-perfect winner. William McKinley High School once had a champion glee club, but now they are floundering.
