Iggy Pop Times Talk in June 24th

Friend and colleague Anne M. Raso tells The Mac Wire that Iggy Pop's Times Talk held which was held on June 24th was a journey through Iggy's influences. Vintage film clips of Iggy's heroes—from Louis Armstrong to James Brown to the Ramones were shown and then Iggy commented on why he loved that particular musical act, and even talked about the ones he met and knew well.

Particularly memorable was the footage of a Ramones' sound check in Rome circa 1980 and Iggy commented later, "Joey Ramone is like the modern day Statue Of Liberty!" He also discussed the way Johnny Ramone ruled the group with an iron fist and how he hated how modern day bands like Offspring where making big bucks off the original sound that his bands created. Iggy, looking fit in designer jeans, a tight gray T-shirt and one boat shoe and one orthopedic shoe (he must have had an accident lately), talked about his early high school groups but really didn't discuss any of the tunes or antics that made him famous. In the last ten minutes of the Times Talk, Iggy fielded questions from the audience members and time was up just as a five or six-year-old go up to ask a question! We wonder what the kid would have asked!

Iggy spoke a big about his discoverer/mentor Danny Fields, who discovered the Stooges in 1969— he did not even know that Danny was in the crowd but it was clear he had a lot of good things to say. We caught Danny (our editor at Hard Rock Video in the late 80s and early 90s) going up to say hi to the Iguana after the presentation ended though! Just so you know, Iggy has confirmed the Stooges are rehearsing without him at the moment and seems to think there will be a tour next year. Old School Stooges James Williamson and Scott Asheton are involved— and as you know, axeman Ron Asheton passed away last year (and believe it or not, his name was not brought up during the entire Times Talk)! Hats off to Times reporter, Ben Ratliff, who asked some interesting questions to Iggy— but we would have liked some nosier, tabloid-type stuff— we have to shamefully admit! After all, Iggy has had quite the checkered past! We would have liked to hear about the time he smeared peanut butter on himself onstage or his relationships with late former groupie Sabel Starr and her sister Corel Starr!

R.E.M. TO RELEASE LIVE DIGITAL EP

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- R.E.M. will release a live digital EP, entitled Reckoning Songs From The Olympia, through iTunes and all digital service providers on July 7th, 2009.

The EP features live versions of four songs from the band's beloved second album Reckoning that were recorded during R.E.M.'s "working rehearsals" at Dublin's Olympia Theatre in July 2007. The track-listing is "Harborcoat," "Letter Never Sent," "Second Guessing," and "Pretty Persuasion." In its five-star live review, Q magazine said: " Eleven new songs are played each night, while the remainder are a changing complement of oldies that pointedly contextualize the virgin material." (http://remhq.com/news_story.php?id=585).

The EP will give fans a preview of what's to come when the band release R.E.M. Live At The Olympia as a two-CD set this fall. R.E.M., which is singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills, performed a special five-night residency -- dubbed "working rehearsals" -- at the fabled Irish venue to test out new songs for their 2008 studio album Accelerate, which was produced by Grammy-Award winning producer Jacknife Lee and topped multiple charts its first week of release.

Reckoning Songs From The Olympia comes on the heels of the 25th anniversary of Reckoning, which was released on April 9th, 1984. On June 23rd, the band released a deluxe edition of the album, featuring a bonus disc with eight of its 10 songs recorded live in Chicago in 1984, to celebrate the occasion.

DOLLY PARTON GOES PLATINUM IN U.K.

As DOLLY PARTON readies her DOLLY LIVE IN LONDON CD/DVD for an anticipated early November release worldwide on Dolly Records, the iconic superstar’s overseas success is re-underlined as The Very Best of Dolly Parton has been certified platinum in the U.K., with sales of over 300,000 copies.

DOLLY LIVE IN LONDON also features the singer, songwriter and musician--hailed as a “force of nature” onstage by thePhiladelphia Inquirer (5/5/08) and whose “clear, Tennessee mountain soprano is simply stunning and still soars,” wrote the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (4/24/08)--sharing many touching and hilarious stories about her life and her family with her adoring audience, which will enlighten her fans on the origins of some of her most famous songs. For instance, Dolly reveals memories of the “real” Jolene, who apparently made a play for Dolly’s husband Carl many years ago. She also discusses her impoverished upbringing in East Tennessee growing up as the fourth of 12 children and how it inspired songs like “Coat of Many Colors. “

Of her 2008 U.K. tour, the London Times said, "Dolly Parton sang beautifully and accompanied herself with an able touch on guitar, piano, violin, banjo, harmonica, dulcimer, tin whistle and tambourine. And at regular points during her two-hour performance in Glasgow, she pulled out a succession of hits from one of the great songbooks of the country-pop era: ‘Jolene,’ ‘Islands in the Stream,’ ‘9 to 5,’ ‘Coat of Many Colours’ and a show-stopping ‘I Will Always Love You’ (July 1, 2008)."

TWILIGHT BEAUTY MAKEUP

Twilight-inspired make up is coming a big way. There will be two different lines—Luna Twilight and Volturi. A stylist for the lines commented: "Luna Twilight is more luxurious of the two offerings—the packaging is heartbreakingly gorgeous and the formulas are more sophisticated than the alternate collection." The makeup release date hasn't been announced yet, but we're guessing it it will be closer to the November 20th New Moon movie date.

NEW B.B.KING BLUES CLUB ADDITIONS

Saturday, July 25 American Idol’s BO BICE Doors at 6:00pm, Show at 8:00pm $25 adv, $30 at door Don't worry; that wasn't an imposter who was named "American Idol's" Season 4 runner-up in 2005. But the Bo Bice people saw on the show and heard on the subsequent gold-certified album THE REAL THING was just a taste of the broad and deep spectrum of music the Alabama-born singer has a passionate drive to write and sing. On SEE THE LIGHT, the first release on Sugar Money/ StratArt Records label, he promises we are getting to hear "the genuine Bo." "I'm grateful for THE REAL THING; that was a fun album. But that wasn't MY album," Bo explains. "This time it was just total freedom. We had no inhibitions about what this was going to be; we just went in and did whatever we wanted to. The freedom shines through." SEE THE LIGHT is the kind of classic American album that's heard all too rarely in these days of careful calculation and tight formatting. Bo is the kind of artist who can't find enough musical roads to travel, and he demonstrates it on this broad-reaching 10-song set that spans the crunchy, Southern-fried rock of "This Train," "Got Money" and "Whiskey, Women & Time," the funky groove of "Witness," the swampy soul of "Take the Country Out of Me" and stark, emotional ballads such as "Only Words," "Sinner in a Sin" and "I'm Gone." Friday, July 24 THE DAVE MATTHEWS TRIBUTE BAND Doors at 11:00pm, Show at 11:30pm $12 adv, $17 at door Hailing from Buffalo, NY, the Dave Matthews Tribute Band is the only nationally touring tribute to the Dave Matthews Band. This 6-piece ensemble strives to pay homage to their famous counterparts by matching the excitement, energy, intensity and intimacy of a DMB live show. "As fans, we love getting together with others to celebrate and give tribute to DMB and their music." The Dave Matthews Tribute Band has worked hard to bring musical expertise and an energetic stage presence to remake and provide fans with a true 'DMB experience'. "The whole basis of the band is to put on a musical play," says Clifford. "We try to recreate the experience you may get from the real band." Mission: Impossible IV' in the works

(Variety)Mission: Impossible IV, which once seemed truly impossible,

is taking shape at Paramount.

Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have agreed to co-produce the sequel, which is aimed at a 2011 release.

The return of Cruise to Par itself is surprising in view of the circumstances surrounding his departure in August 2006. Apparently irked by the heft of Cruise’s deal, among other issues, Viacom chief Sumner Redstone abruptly terminated the 14-year relationship between the star and the studio. Cruise’s then-CAA agent, Rick Nicita, termed Redstone’s decision “shockingly offensive and graceless.”

The rift led to Cruise becoming the chief of United Artists and taking a more active role in production decisions. Redstone, meanwhile, has sought to heal the relationship. At a recent appearance, he described the star as “a great actor and a good friend.”

The “Mission” instalment would augment Paramount’s formidable array of sequels, which will include Star Trek 2 and a third Transformers.

Work on “Mission: Impossible IV” would inevitably be delayed by the busy schedules of the participants.

Abrams will be responsible for guiding the “Star Trek” sequel, while Cruise recently committed to an untitled pic (formerly called “Wichita”) for 20th Century Fox that will be directed by James Mangold and co-star Cameron Diaz.

Cruise and Denzel Washington are also awaiting a rewrite on the David Cronenberg-directed “The Matarese Circle,” the MGM thriller based on the Robert Ludlum novel.

SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME BRINGS OUT THE STARS FOR 40th ANNIVERSARY GALA

The 2009 Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) 40th Anniversary Awards show was a dazzling success, as SHOF Chairman/CEO Hal David and President Linda Moran recognized and celebrated some of the key songwriting icons of popular culture. Last night, heavyweights Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora; Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati (The Young Rascals); Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Galt MacDermot, James Rado and Gerome Ragni (deceased); and Stephen Schwartz were inducted into its hallowed Hall. Honored with special awards were Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland of Holland-Dozier-Holland, who were presented with the esteemed Johnny Mercer Award; Andy Williams, who was presented with the Towering Performance Award; Jason Mraz, who received The Hal David Starlight Award; Sir Tom Jones, who was presented with The Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award and Maxyne Lang , who was honored with The Abe Olman Publisher Award. The Towering Song this year went to "Moon River," which Williams sang with heart, reminding the sold out crowd why he claimed it for his own back in 1962, where he first performed it at that year's Academy Awards. The Songwriters Hall of Fame is always a night full of once-in-a-lifetime, not-to-be-missed, special moments and the 2009 40th anniversary gala was another winner. Inductees Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were presented with their prestigious award by platinum-selling singer-songwriter-guitarist Chris Daughtry, who performed a rocking rendition of "I'll Be There For You," followed by Bon Jovi and Sambora wowing the crowd with a performance of their mega hit "Wanted," who responded in kind with a standing ovation. Grammy-nominated artist and songwriter in demand, Ryan Tedder, impressed the crowd with his soaring take on The Young Rascals' "It's A Beautiful Morning," as he presented Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati with their induction award into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Country star Clint Black presented to inductees Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway, and performed for them one of their iconic hits - "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" - covered by Black on his 2008 digital EP, Long Cool Woman. Timeless and iconic folk rock powerhouse Crosby, Stills & Nash were presented their induction award by another folk rock icon, James Taylor, who serenaded the rapt audience with a classic CSN medley that took everyone back in time. The gems included "Love The One You're With," "Long Time Gone" and "Teach Your Children." The undeniable talent that has emanated from Broadway was further represented with the induction of Stephen Schwartz, who penned the music for such Broadway mega hits as Godspell, Pippin, Wicked, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pocahontas. Schwartz was inducted by John Ondrasik, who debuted a new Schwartz/Ondrasik song "Slice." Stephen then kept the crowd moving with his performance of "For Good," from Wicked. The Johnny Mercer Award, the highest honor from SHOF as only previous inductees can be eligible, was presented to Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, Jr. of Holland-Dozier-Holland, the unmistakable songwriting powerhouse that created the Motown Sound, writing 13 consecutive #1 records with the Supremes alone, in addition to all the hits they composed for the Four Tops, Martha & the Vandelas and Marvin Gaye, among others. Bebe Winans honored the songwriters with a soulful rendition of "You Can't Hurry Love." Then, Holland-Dozier-Holland were aptly presented their award by their mentor, Motown founder and industry icon, Berry Gordy. "FDR, LBJ, JFK, and then you have H-D-H," Gordy said. "You know you've made it when people know you by your initials, and with what these guys have given to popular culture, they deserve to be in that company." This year's Hal David Starlight Award, given to gifted songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry via their original songs, came full circle with recipient Jason Mraz being presented it by the inaugural Starlight Award winner, Rob Thomas. "I hate this guy," Thomas joked. "He's too damn good. We need him to step back from the curb so we can all look better." Jason then sang an infectious "I'm Yours" from his repertoire to a very appreciative crowd. Sir Tom Jones was this year's recipient of the Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award, which is specifically tailored for artists or "star makers" in the music industry who have been responsible for a substantial number of hit songs for an extended period of time. Sir Tom's five decade career of hits, selling over 100 million records, more than fits the bill. Inducted last night by American Idol's Kara DioGuardi, Jones performed a favorite chestnut from 1966, "Green Green Grass" and then rocked the crowd with his iconic tune, "It's Not Unusual." This year's Towering Song, "Moon River," written by SHOF co-founder and great American songwriter, the late Johnny Mercer (lyrics), who would have turned 100 this year, and the versatile and celebrated Henry Mancini (music) captured the hearts of Americans when it was first performed by Audrey Hepburn in her 1961 blockbuster classic, Breakfast At Tiffany's. But when extraordinary crooner and national treasure Andy Williams sang it at the 1962 Academy Awards ceremony, where it won an Oscar for "Best Original Song," "Moon River" became his for life. Williams accepted the honor to that claim last night, taking home the Towering Performance Award, only the second time SHOF has presented this award in its history. In his acceptance speech, Williams reminded the audience how important the song is to the career of the singer. Maxyne Lang, president of the prestigious and highly successful independent publishing company Williamson Music and Williamson Music International, the global publishing divisions of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, was the recipient of the Abe Olman Publisher Award this year. Country artist Joe Nichols, who will be starring in Pure Country on Broadway in November, presented her with the award and sang a beautiful rendition of "If I Loved You," a Rodgers & Hammerstein song. Lang has championed the music of not only the Rodgers & Hammerstein catalog she oversees, but this year's inductee Stephen Schwartz, the Broadway blockbusters In The Heights, Legally Blonde, Grey Gardens and Avenue Q, among others. Current musical artists who have celebrated the Williamson Music catalogue include Gwen Stefani, Outkast, Twisted Sister and others. With the Broadway revival of Hair having just garnered the Tony Award for "Best Revival of a Musical," inductees and Hair composers Galt MacDermot, James Rado and Erick Ragni, son of Gerome Ragni who was there in spirit for sure, had a lot to celebrate. Cousin Bruce Morrow presented them with their induction award and Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., of the legendary Fifth Dimension, celebrated the infectious and timeless music of the three with a soaring rendition of the songs they took to the top of the charts in the 70's - "Aquarius" and "Let The Sunshine In." As a grand finale, cast members of the current Broadway revival exploded onto the stage and joined hundreds of audience members in singing the timeless hit. The 40th anniversary year for the Songwriters Hall of Fame was truly a phenomenal celebration of not only the organization who has dedicated itself to championing the songwriter, but to each of the industry titans it honored this year and all they have contributed to our popular culture. For those lucky enough to attend, it was a night one won't quickly forget.

AEROSMITH DRUMMER'S TRIBUTE TO WOUNDED SOLDIERS

AEROSMITH drummer JOEY KRAMER will celebrate his June 21 birthday with 20 wounded warriors he has invited to be his personal guests at the band’s show that night at Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, VA, near Washington, DC. The Marines and Sailors--who all served in Iraq or Afghanistan— are from the National Naval Medical Center and are currently receiving treatment/therapy for their injuries. Some are single leg amputees; others have suffered blast injuries (shrapnel wounds), burns, and traumatic brain injuries.

INSIDE ELTON JOHN'S BRAVE NEW WORLD OF ART

David Furnish help Elton build the outside of London art gallery.
