Following weeks of rumors, it has been confirmed that Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey are leaving after one season of serving on the American Idol judge’s panel. Both women announced the news Thursday on Twitter.
"Thank you American Idol for a life-changing experience," Minaj wrote. "Wouldn't trade it for the world! Time to focus on the music! Muah!"
Carey’s PR firm wrote: “W/ global success of “#Beautiful” (#1 in 30+ countries so far) @MariahCarey confirms world tour & says goodbye 2 Idol.”
Fox and FremantleMedia also confirmed Carey’s departure in a joint statement. "Mariah Carey is a true global icon — one of the most accomplished artists on the planet — and we feel extremely fortunate that she was able to bring her wisdom and experience to the 'American Idol' contestants this season. We know she will remain an inspiration to 'Idol' hopefuls for many seasons to come," the statement said.
The news comes three weeks after veteran judge Randy Jackson said he was leaving after 12 seasons so he could focus on other work. That leaves only Keith Urban’s fate to be decided. The country singer joined Idol at the same time as Minaj and Carey. Earlier this week he told the Associated Press that he had “no official information” about the next season.
“I'm pretty much in the same boat as everybody else here with the rumors that have been floating around. I don't know anything more about what's happening next season. It was like this before I signed on . . . so it's not unusual for the Idol folks to be in this place of figuring out what they want to do, then they always pull it together,” he said.
One of the rumors surrounding the Idol shakeup is American Idol alums joining the judge’s panel. The front runners are rumored to be Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert.

Blondie star Deborah Harry uses a special card given to her by a New York cop to avoid incurring costly fines for driving offenses, the singer said.
The iconic singer admits police officers sometimes let her off with a warning when they realize they have pulled over a rock star, but now she has gone one better by obtaining a card stating she is a "friend" of cops in the Big Apple.
The canny rocker places it next to her driving licence in her purse so officers spot it when she shows them her credentials - and it works every time.
Asked if she ever uses her fame to get around traffic offences, Harry tells Q magazine, "Well, sometimes I don't have to. I have a friend who's a New York City sergeant. He gave me a special card to say I'm a friend of the New York City police.
"One time I was pulled over and that card was very conveniently placed close to my driver's licence. They let me go with a warning... If it was a serious offense it might not mean s**t."
The Public Enemies star was set to play the notorious Boston, Massachusetts crime lord, who was at the top of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Most Wanted List for almost two decades, in Barry Levinson's upcoming film.
But, according to industry reports, producers had a hard time finding a buyer for the project at France's recent Cannes Film Festival, and asked Depp to take a $10 million pay cut to accommodate a new budget.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the veteran refused and now studio bosses are scrambling to find a replacement.
There are currently two other films about Bulger in the works - Matt Damon is slated to portray the crime boss in a movie directed by his pal Ben Affleck, while Peter Facinelli has secured the rights to adapt Edward MacKenzie and Phyllis Karas' book Street Soldier: My Life as an Enforcer for Whitey Bulger and the Boston Irish Mob for a rival movie.

George Clooney is not happy about the latest round of rumors surround his love live. The actor spoke out Wednesday against reports he was spotted over the weekend holding hands with former girlfriend Monika Jakisic at a members-only club in Mayfair, London.
“The story is made up. I wasn't holding anybody's hand. Stop trying to sell magazines by creating scandal that isn't there,” says Clooney, who has been dating former wrestler Stacy Keibler for 2 years.
Witnesses had claimed Clooney, 52, was being very affectionate with Jakisic, a Croatian model, during a night out with friends as Loulou’s.
“They seemed to be having a great old time together. He didn't seem to care who saw them. He was being openly affectionate,” a witness told In Touch magazine. “Lots of people were going up and saying hi to George — he didn't leave Monika's side.”
Clooney is in Europe to film The Monuments Men with Matt Damon and Cate Blanchett.

Amanda Bynes’ DUI lawyer has come to her defense in the wake of her drug related arrest in New York City. Richard Hutton tells People magazine that the 27-year-old is a “fine client.” Hutton represents Bynes in her DUI trouble in Los Angeles, but he is not involved in her NYC case.
"I think [reports] are way exaggerated," he said. "I think Amanda's fine. I have no problems with her whatsoever. She's a fine client."
Hutton also says that he believes NYC authorities don’t have “much of a case” against the actress. “Even if you believe everything you hear, it's something that amounts to virtually nothing. And it's my understanding there's not much evidence to back that case up. There's no physical evidence to back it up. I understand there's no marijuana, no pipe,” he said.
Bynes was arrested last Thursday at her Manhattan apartment after building personnel witnessed her smoking marijuana in the lobby. When police arrived, Bynes allegedly threw a bong out a window in her 36th floor unit. She was taken to Roosevelt Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after her arrest. Bynes was later booked for marijuana possession, reckless endangerment and tampering with evidence.
Bynes’s DUI trouble stems from an April 6, 2012 arrest in West Hollywood. She was taken into custody after she crashed into a police car and then refused a breathalyzer test. The next hearing is set for July 18.

Keith Urban is still unsure if his American Idol journey will continue. The country singer admits he is in the “same boat” with fans when it comes to knowing anything about the season 13 judge’s panel.
"I have no official information of anything. I'm pretty much in the same boat as everybody else here with the rumors that have been floating around," he told the Associated Press in an interview on Tuesday. "I don't know anything more about what's happening next season. It was like this before I signed on . . . so it's not unusual for the Idol folks to be in this place of figuring out what they want to do, then they always pull it together."
Earlier this month, Urban said he would love to return to the judge’s panel. “I would. I mean, I literally enjoy coming to work every day, and that’s a rarity,” he said.
Urban appeared on season 12 along with Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson. Jackson announced his departure earlier this month.
Among the many rumors surrounding the Idol shakeup is American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson signing on as a judge. Idol bosses reportedly plan to approach season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson next, and either season 2 runner up Clay Aiken or season 8 runner up Adam Lambert.
Beyonce calmly had a fan thrown out of her Copenhagen concert on Monday after the man slapped her on the butt. The man has not been identified.
The incident happened after Beyonce held the microphone out so the man could sing part of ‘Irreplaceable.’ Beyonce stopped briefly to tell the man that he had to leave. "I'm gonna have you escorted out of here, all right?" she said.
Beyonce continued singing ‘Irreplaceable’ after the encounter. A fan caught the incident on tape and posted it on YouTube. Beyonce has not commented.
The singer kicked off her Mrs. Carter World Tour in Serbia last month. Concerts are scheduled in Switzerland, Italy, France and Eastern Europe. The tour will make its way to the U.S. in June and will end two months later with a final show at Barclay's Center in Brooklyn.
Earlier this month, Beyonce was forced to cancel a concert in Antwerp, Belgium due to exhaustion, dehydration, and doctor’s orders to rest. The cancellation fueled rumors she is pregnant with her second child with husband Jay Z. The couple is already parents to 1-year-old daughter Blue.

Actress Amanda Bynes has threatened to sue New York Police Department (NYPD) officials and staff at her Manhattan apartment complex following her marijuana possession arrest last week in a new Twitter.com rant.
Maintaining she's "proud to not be a drug or alcohol user" the Hairspray star has issued a rambling new tweet, which she promises will be the "last thing I'll say about the mistaken arrest".
She then rages, "I'm suing NYPD for illegally entering my apartment, lying about drugs on me and lying about me tampering with non existent drug paraphernalia, then I'm suing for being put into a mental hospital against my will, then locked up overnight for coming home after a facial and working out with my trainer like the good girl that I am."
She adds, "I'm allergic to alcohol and drugs and don't partake in any of the above. I'm so offended by all of this but so proud to not be a drug or alcohol user. I don't need to talk about this anymore. My lawyer and I are taking this offense so seriously! Everything they did was against the law.
"I was so offended to even be taken to a mental hospital and they would not let me call my lawyer until the next day after being in jail all night, then I went to court and was immediately released because the judge saw that I was wrongly arrested.
"The cops found no proof of any type of drug use or evidence of drug paraphernalia such as a bong in or around my apartment.
"I'm also suing my apartment complex for lying about me smoking in my building. I'm free forever! You can't lock up an innocent person!"
And Bynes concludes her latest missive by writing, "Look forward to seeing me in music videos! I'm getting in shape and getting a nose job! I'm looking forward to a long and wonderful career as a singer/rapper!"
Police claim they raided the actress' apartment on Thursday night after responding to a report that she was smoking pot in the building's lobby. They claim Bynes threw a bong out of her window as they arrived. She was later taken to Roosevelt Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and charged with marijuana possession, tampering with evidence and reckless endangerment.

Illusionist Criss Angel has cancelled a second death-defying stunt in Las Vegas after police officers struggled to control thousands of fans who lined the streets to see his latest trick.
The magician was set to be buried alive in concrete as part of a public illusion outside Sin City's Mirage resort on Wednesday night, but organizers underestimated the number of people who turned out to watch.
Cops struggled to control the surging crowd and the event was called off over safety fears.
Angel has since apologized to fans and insisted the stunt will be rescheduled.
In a series of posts on Twitter.com, he writes, "I'm so honored to have had such an enormous crowd turn out but am very disappointed that we got shut down - officials never expected (a big) size crowd... We'll reschedule Buried Alive with appropriate number of police. I'm sincerely sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused anyone."
The news comes just days after Angel was forced to cancel a similarly scary stunt in Las Vegas on Friday due to bad weather. The star had planned to walk blindfolded across a steel beam suspended between two high-rise buildings, but cancelled his plans because of strong winds.
Actor Ryan Gosling personally apologized to the media at the Cannes Film Festival for skipping the premiere of his new movie Only God Forgives on Wednesday by penning a letter explaining his absence.
The actor was expected to promote his latest project with Drive filmmaker Nicholas Winding Refn, but filming on his directorial debut, How to Catch a Monster, forced him to miss the screening and related press commitments.
The gracious Hollywood hunk made it known that he was upset about not attending by sending an apology.
The letter, read out at a press conference for the film by festival director Thierry Fremaux, reads: "Can't believe I'm not In Cannes. I was hoping to come but I'm on week three shooting my film in Detroit. Miss you all. Nicolas, my friend, we really are the same persons in different dimensions. I'm sending you good vibrations."
And Refn insisted he had no hard feelings towards Gosling for choosing to continue work on How to Catch a Monster over their big premiere - because he understands what his pal is going through.
He told reporters, "I would never even do it (leave a project for a premiere) if I was in his situation. One thing is being an actor. When you're directing, it's another arena. But I speak to him every day on the phone. In a way, he is here."
Gosling's presence may not have been enough to win over the audience at Cannes - the bloody and violent film, about a drug smuggler who is pressured into avenging his brother's death, was reportedly met with boos by festival attendees.
A writer for Vulture.com reports: "When one painfully long torture sequence concluded with eye and ear mutilation, the audience revolted. When one character stuck his hand inside a woman's slashed body, the audience locked and loaded its boos. Gosling doesn't have much to say in this movie, but the auditorium sure did."
|Matt Damon and Michael Douglas star in "Behind The Candelabra."|
In the new film "Behind the Candelabra," veteran entertainer Debbie Reynolds has just three major scenes to flesh out one of the most complicated figures in piano-playing showman Liberace's life: his loving but sometimes manipulative mother Frances.
The Oscar-, Tony- and Emmy-nominated Reynolds didn't need to do any homework for the part. She knew Frances. Reynolds joined Liberace's inner circle while both were doing stage shows in Las Vegas.
"I tell the story when Lee called me one night after work," Reynolds remembered, using Liberace's nickname. "I was at the Desert Inn, he was at the Hilton, and he said, 'Debbie, I'll pick you up after the show, and we'll take Tom Jones. It's his birthday.'"
"I have never had a better time than being Liberace's date," the 81-year-old Reynolds continued. "We all knew he was homosexual. That was a friend: You know what they love and the people that they love, and what they are."
"Behind the Candelabra" picks up the story of Liberace, played by Michael Douglas, in the '70s and focuses on his six-year relationship with the much younger Scott Thorson, portrayed by Matt Damon.
Reynolds, who also knew Thorson, highly praised both of the film's stars. "They had to immerse themselves: two straight men, to make this come off as loving and real."
Liberace died from complications of AIDS in 1987 at age 67. He never publicly acknowledged he was gay.
"I don't want him to be remembered just for being homosexual," Reynolds explained. "He should be remembered as a great entertainer and loved by so many. And this picture does do that."
"Behind the Candelabra" premieres on HBO in the U.S. and on HBO Canada Sunday. On the heels of its theatrical world premiere this week in Cannes, the film begins a run in overseas cinemas starting in June.

A collection of letters and lyrics written by the late John Lennon has been donated to the British Library in London by the Beatles' only official biographer.
Hunter Davies, who befriended the legendary singer in the 1960s, has taken advantage of a new tax relief initiative in the U.K., titled the Cultural Gifts Scheme, which encourages people to hand over gifts for the nation in return for a tax reduction.
His memorabilia includes his correspondence with Lennon, a note containing the lines to the Fab Four's 1967 hit Strawberry Fields Forever and an early draft of In My Life.
The 77 year old says, "I want my Beatles collection to be kept together, in one place, and on public display, and the British Library is the perfect home for it. I'm really pleased the cultural gifts scheme has helped me make this a reality."
According to the BBC, Davies' donation is expected to save him $495,225 - roughly 30 per cent of the value of the collection - in taxes over five years.
Get ready to see more of Farrah Abraham! The former Teen Mom star is headed back to reality TV with a “docu-soap” series for Spinboi Films.
“MAJOR NEWS!! Spinboi Films has signed Teen Mom Farrah Abraham to develop a new reality docu-soap! TV magic coming soon!” the New York-based TV production company wrote on Facebook.
"Get ready for better TV," Abraham tweeted. “The news is true."
The 21-year-old, who was thrust into the spotlight with the release of her porn film Farrah Superstar: Backdoor Teen Mom, previously admitted to shopping for her own reality show. Abraham said she wanted the series to feature her 4-year-old daughter Sophia.
“There are a lot of meetings for a spin off show with me right now, so I just need to see what I like. I have had other leads in the past when I got out of my contract with MTV, but I haven’t found anything I agree with yet but when the time is right I’ll be OK with that,” she told HollywoodLife. “Sophia will of course be in it. My daughter is part of my life; she is going to be involved.”
She also told Us Weekly magazine that she has no plans for another porn movie. "I'm not choosing that life. I'm getting an online master's in business communication and I want to open a modern fusion restaurant in Austin that has a drunk driving campaign to help people make good choices," she said. "I really want to change the world."
For Aly Raisman, not winning Dancing with the Stars was “heartbreaking.” The Olympic gymnast and her partner Mark Ballas were the first couple eliminated on Tuesday night’s season finale. They finished fourth behind Jacoby Jones in third, Zendaya in second and Kellie Pickler in first place.
"Right when they announced [our elimination], it was just heartbreaking. You work so hard and everyone wants to win,” she admitted to People magazine after the show.
"When I really stop and think about how lucky I am to be on the show, and what an amazing opportunity this was, and how much fun I had, it's okay," she said. "We have absolutely no regrets. We worked so hard and we had so much fun, so that's what counts."
"I was cheering for [the remaining contestants]. They were amazing. It was awesome. It was fun to watch. I was happy for them,” Raisman added.
Meanwhile, Pickler told Us Weekly magazine that she was “overwhelmed” after her win. "I'm overwhelmed with joy. I'm kind of speechless for the first time! Usually I can't be quiet! Usually I'm just spitting out words left and right, and now I don't know what to say,” she said.
“We've made so many memories out here on this dance floor and in the studio. We've all worked so hard to be her, and it's just overwhelming. But in a great way,” Pickler added.
Although Kanye West is reportedly determined to stop Kim Kardashian from making money off her pregnancy or their baby-to-be, insiders claim the reality star and her mom/manager Kris Jenner have found ways to go behind the rapper’s back. The pair allegedly orchestrated the sale of Kardashian’s bikini pictures from Greece by having photographers pay for information on where she will be.
“After seeing the bikini pics, Kanye suspected this is Kim setting stuff up and it makes it sick to his stomach,” an insider told Life & Style magazine. “He detests Kim selling her personal life and absolutely won’t stand for her selling their baby’s life too.”
Another source says Jenner is now trying to find a way to “sell the pictures from Kim’s baby shower too.”
Meanwhile, West has reportedly “made it very clear” that Kardashian cannot sell the baby’s first pictures. He has also told her to “finally start acting like a mom instead of a businesswoman,” according to a source.
Kardashian took her final trip before the baby’s summer birth this week. "My final trip before I can't fly anymore!" she wrote on her blog Tuesday. "My mom and I flew to Paris to soak in the amazingness Paris has to offer before I can't travel anymore! We were doing some baby shopping and checking on our place here before heading to LA for a while."
The duo spent time shopping for the baby in St. Germain district, but their purchases didn’t give any hints about the baby’s gender.

X Factor bosses have finally replaced former judges L.A. Reid and Britney Spears. Fox announced Monday that UK X Factor judge Kelly Rowland has joined the American X Factor along with Latin singer Paulina Rubio. The women join Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato."It's taken more than a decade, but I'm delighted to finally be on a panel with three girls (I think!). Paulina and Kelly both have great taste and massive experience in the music industry and together with Demi, this is going to be a fun panel. It just feels like the time to do something different,” Cowell said in a statement.
"I can't wait to find the next big music star here in America. I'm so thrilled to be part of the show as a judge. Simon, be careful what you wish for, let's see if you are ready to handle me, empieza la fiesta, amigo!” Rubio said in a statement.
Rowland, 32, said, "I am very excited to be reuniting with Simon Cowell and The X Factor family. It feels great to be able to take this journey here at home in the States!"
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are taking steps to separate their lives following their breakup. On Sunday, Pattinson was spotted leaving Stewart’s Los Feliz home with his two dogs and a truck load of belongings. Wearing sunglasses and a red baseball hat, Pattinson appeared somber as he pulled away from the home.
Neither Pattinson, 27, nor Stewart, 23, has commented on their split. An insider said the pair had been fighting over Stewart’s moodiness and her 2012 cheating scandal with director Rupert Sanders. "All this stuff came up about the cheating, about how selfish she always is, about how moody she always is," an insider said.
The Twilight stars separated briefly last summer after Us Weekly magazine published pictures of Stewart kissing Sanders, 41, during a secret rendezvous in L.A. Stewart called the incident a “momentary indiscretion.” “I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry," she said in a statement at the time.
A first edition copy of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" that contains author J.K. Rowling's notes and original illustrations has sold for 150,000 pounds ($228,000) at a London auction.
Sotheby's said the work, offered as part of a charity book sale jointly organized with the writer's association English PEN, was sold to an anonymous bidder by telephone late Tuesday.
Rowling peppered the book with about two dozen illustrations and many personal annotations, including editorial decisions and a note on how she came to create the game of Quidditch.
Other participating authors in the charity sale included Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan, Seamus Heaney, Lionel Shriver and Yann Martel.
The funds raised will benefit English PEN, which promotes the freedom to read and write.

Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist who was a founding member of The Doors, has died. He was 74.
Publicist Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald says in a news release that Manzarek died Monday at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his family. He had been stricken by bile duct cancer.
Manzarek founded The Doors after meeting then-poet Jim Morrison in California. The band went on to become one of the most successful rock 'n' roll acts to emerge from the 1960s and continues to resonate with fans decades after Morrison's death brought the band to an end.
It’s over again for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Sources say constant fighting over Stewart’s moodiness led to the breakup. Her cheating scandal with director Rupert Sanders last July was also a factor.
"All this stuff came up about the cheating, about how selfish she always is, about how moody she always is," an insider reveals.
Despite the arguing, a source says the Twilight stars “could get back together.”
Neither Pattinson, 27, nor Stewart, 23, has commented.
The pair briefly split last summer after Us Weekly magazine published pictures of Stewart kissing Sanders, 41, during a secret rendezvous in L.A. Stewart later issued a public apology to Pattinson. “I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry," she said in a statement.
They reunited a few months later.
Stewart appeared last in 2012’s On the Road. Pattinson can be seen next alongside Guy Pearce and Scoot McNairy.
Veteran funnyman Mel Brooks will be honored with the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award.
The Blazing Saddles director will receive the 41st honor from fellow legendary Hollywood movie-maker Martin Scorsese at a ceremony next month.
The prestigious award will be handed out as a tribute to Brooks' 60-yearentertainment career.
Sir Howard Stringer, chairman for the AFI Board of Trustees, says, "For over 50 years, Mel Brooks has given the world its greatest gift - laughter. At the American Film Institute, we also want to shine a proper light on his contributions to the art form as writer, producer, director and actor - and who better to bestow this honor than one of the masters of American film, Martin Scorsese."
Brooks will receive the honor at a ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on June 6.
Previous recipients of the award include Alfred Hitchcock, James Cagney, Sidney Poitier and Gene Kelly.
The second time was the charm for Trace Adkins on Celebrity Apprentice. The country singer, who lost the reality show competition to Piers Morgan in 2008, was “hired” by Donald Trump on the All-Star season finale Sunday night. Illusionist Penn Jillette was the runner up.
The final challenge involved Adkins and Jillette facing off in an ice cream duel. Both men had to create their own Walgreens Delish ice cream flavor and promote the product with a video and a VIP launch party. While Jillette’s Magic Swurtle actually out sold Adkins’ Maple Macadamia Mash-up, Adkins raised more money than Jillette. Adkins raised $564,000 to Jillette’s $503,655.
“The winner of All-Star Celebrity Apprentice is … the very great … Trace Adkins,” Trump announced.
"Trace is a star all the way and now joins Piers Morgan, Joan Rivers, Bret Michaels, John Rich and Arsenio Hall as winners of the toughest reality show on television today," he added. "I'd also like to salute Penn, who was also a very impressive player."
Adkins was awarded an extra $250,000 to give to his charity, the American Red Cross.
"Sometimes in life, we begin a task wondering if it's the right thing to do," Adkins said. "Tonight, I can proudly say that competing on the show a second time ended up being a very good thing. I was honored to play for the American Red Cross – they came to my family's aid when we needed them, and I am a man who repays my debts,” Adkins said after his win.
Lil Jon was crowned the fan favorite and was given $100,000 for his charity, the American Diabetes Association.

Alan O'Day dies, Alan O'Day, who crafted popular songs for artists like the Righteous Brothers and Helen Reddy before scoring a No. 1 of his own with the bouncy 1977 hit "Undercover Angel," lost his battle with cancer on Friday, his record label announced. He was 72.
The songwriter, producer and artist died at his home in Westwood, Calif. surrounded by family and friends.
"Alan continued to write and perform until his last days," a statement from 1st Phase Records reads. "Alan was a generous man who gave his heart and soul to the music industry."
The sentiment was echoed by O'Day's close friend, award-winning songwriter Diane Warren: "My dear dear friend and mentor Alan O'Day has passed away. 'If you believe in forever, then life is just a one night stand. If there's a rock and roll Heaven, well you know they've got one hell of a band.' (From Alans' song Rock And roll Heaven). Well the band just got better. Rest in Peace my friend."
O'Day signed with Warner Bros. in 1971, later writing "Train of Thought" for Cher, "Rock and Roll Heaven" for the Righteous Brothers, and the 1974 No. 1 "Angel Baby" by Helen Reddy. Three years later he landed at the top of the Hot 100 with his own single, "Undercover Angel."
In the 1980s, O'Day teamed up with Janis Liebhart to co-write dozens of songs for the popular Muppet Babies cartoons.
Throughout his career, O'Day's songs were performed by artists ranging from Johnny Mathis, the 5th Dimension, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Tony Orlando, Three Dog Night and Paul Anka, among others.
"Star Trek: Into Darkness" has warped its way to a $70.6 million domestic launch from Friday to Sunday, though it's not setting any records with a debut that was lower than the studio expected.
The latest voyage of the starship Enterprise fell short of its predecessor, 2009's "Star Trek," which opened with $75.2 million.
Since premiering Wednesday in huge-screen IMAX theaters and expanding Thursday to general cinemas, "Into Darkness" has pulled in $84.1 million, well below distributor Paramount's initial forecast of $100 million. The film has added $80.5 million overseas.
The "Star Trek" sequel bumped "Iron Man 3" down to second-place after two weekends on top. Robert Downey Jr.'s superhero saga took in $35.2 million domestically and $40.2 million overseas to shoot its worldwide total to nearly $1.1 billion.

James Deen was right – Farrah Abraham did use a potential pregnancy for publicity. The Teen Mom star revealed the results from a recent pregnancy test on The Test, a CBS talk show that uses lie detector tests and DNA tests to settle relationship issues.
"DEEP BREATHE "I'M NOT PREGNANT!!!" she tweeted Friday. "Thank GOD! Happy I showed everyone on 'The Test' I have nothing to hide."
Soon after Abraham’s pregnancy test purchase, which seemed to indicate she could be pregnant as the result of the sexual acts she filmed with Deen for her porn video, Deen accused her of trying to get additional publicity.
"To say you're potentially pregnant is not something to joke about. When you knowingly involve another human being and a publicity stunt around that, a child is not something to be taken lightly. It's not a game anymore and it's really not cool,” Deen said. "This is a type of publicity I do not agree with and I do not want to participate in. Joking or lying or using pregnancy to get attention and media is not cool."
"I spoke to the clinic where we both got tested before our scene along with my personal medical doctor regarding the subject. However, I am more concerned about the fact that Vivid told me she was on birth control," he added. "Had I known she was not taking preventive measures I would have never accepted the scene."
Britain is at risk of losing the James Bond movies after plans to expand the franchise's iconic Pinewood Studios were rejected.
Bosses at the movie unit in Buckinghamshire, England applied to local planning officials for permission to extend the site across an area of adjacent land in what would have been a $310 million project.
However, the proposals were turned down by officials at South Buckinghamshire Council on Wednesday due to the expansion taking place on 'greenbelt' land, where prominent building work is restricted.
Councillor Bill Lidgate says, "We're 87 percent greenbelt in South Bucks and those policies are jealously protected. The point people must understand is that Pinewood Studios do not make films, they rent out buildings."
Just days before the rejection, Pinewood chief executive Ivan Dunleavy warned the studio faced losing the Bond films if the expansion didn't go ahead.
He said, "If we as a sector don't respond to the growing demand (for bigger and better facilities) then someone else will. (The Bond producers) have to be financially responsible. If they get a better proposal elsewhere than the U.K. can mount then they have to look after their business as well."
All except two of the 23 films in the Bond franchise have been filmed at Pinewood.
Angelina Jolie's announcement that she has undergone a preventative double mastectomy has inspired other women to take control.
A survey by market research company YouGov reveals seven out of 10 British women would have the procedure if tests showed they had a high chance of developing breast cancer.
On Tuesday, the Tomb Raider beauty announced in a New York Times piece that she had undergone a double mastectomy as a preventive measure against breast cancer.
Jolie said that doctors estimated that she "had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer" due to a "faulty" gene, BRCA1, which increases cancer risk.
Now 68 percent of women say they would have all natural breast tissue removed and replaced with implants if tests indicated a high probability of developing breast cancer.

“I would. I mean, I literally enjoy coming to work every day, and that’s a rarity,” he said.
Veteran judge Randy Jackson has already confirmed his departure after the current season, but the fates of Urban, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey remain unclear. Show insiders claim Idol bosses plan to let Urban, Minaj and Carey go in order to create a whole new judges panel.
Urban, 45, also opened up to reporters about his judging style. "For me it's just about seeing things about them that they need to get rid of because they get in the way of their true talent — little bad habits when you're starting out,” he explained. “You chip away all the stuff that is there in the beginning. In a lot of ways it's just picking up on those things that I probably had at that age as well.”
As for his thoughts on the final 2 contestants of season 12, Kree Harrison and Candice Glover, Urban says they “share a lot of traits.” "They have a lot of vulnerability and strength that are both apparent when they perform. They're both survivors. They both come from very rootsy, earthy, real families, and I think that's what's apparent in what they do,” he added. “There's no pageantry in either of them; that's why I love them both so much. They sing because they need to sing, not because they want to be famous. That's what they do and we're really lucky to have them.”

Arclight Films executives have snapped up the international rights to Duran Duran Unstaged and plan to launch it during the festival in France, which began on Wednesday.
The band was filmed by the Twin Peaks director performing at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles as part of an online concert streaming initiative. The footage aired the same night as the gig, but it has not been seen since.
Arclight Films managing director Gary Hamilton tells WENN, "We're honored to be representing this unique film, and working with such an incredible team of entertainment industry professionals, whose artistic endeavors have had such a profound effect on people all over the world.
"Duran Duran Unstaged is a breakthrough in moviemaking. It's an experience that marries the arts of film and music in a distinctly creative and refreshing manner that will appeal to audiences worldwide."
Talking about filming the concert, which featured Mark Ronson, Gerard Way, Kelis and Beth Ditto, director Lynch says, "The idea was to try and create, on the fly, layers of images permeating Duran Duran on the stage. (It was) a world of experimentation and some happy accidents."

Although Angelina Jolie’s decision to have a preventative double mastectomy wasn’t easy, her partner Brad Pitt says the journey was “beautifully inspiring” for their entire family.
"I'm quite emotional about it, of course," Pitt told USA Today on Tuesday.
"It's been an emotional and beautifully inspiring few months," he continued. "It's such a wonderful relief to come through this and not have a spectre hanging over our heads. To know that that's not going to be something that's going to affect us. My most proudest thing is our family. This isn't going to get that."
Jolie, 37, made the decision to have the operation after discovering she is a carrier of BRCA1, a “faulty” gene that increases her risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer. Jolie’s mom, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in January 2007.
"She could have stayed absolutely private about it and I don't think anyone would have been none the wiser with such good results. But it was really important to her to share the story and that others would understand it doesn't have to be a scary thing. In fact, it can be an empowering thing, and something that makes you stronger and us stronger,” Pitt said.
The couple even included their 6 children in Jolie’s recovery. "We set up our own little post-op recovery that became pretty fun," added Pitt. "You make an adventure out of it."
In her op-ed article for the New York Times, Jolie said the children were the driving force behind her decision. “My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer,” she wrote.
“On a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity,” the actress added.
Britney Spears loves having two boys, but the pop star says she wants to add a girl to her brood one day. Speaking to Extra host Mario Lopez, who expressed his desire for a son with pregnant wife Courtney Maza, Spears revealed she would love to have a daughter.
"Oh, you do want a girl! So later on, maybe a little girl?" asked Lopez.
"Yes!" Spears, 31, replied.
As for her sons Sean, 7, and Jayden, 6, Spears says it looks like they may break into the entertainment business. "They do like attention, so I think they would probably be good in the limelight," she said. "We're taking baby steps right now as far as agencies and stuff go, but they're little comedians, so we'll see."
Up next for the former X Factor judge is a new album produced by will.i.am. "[Will] is so talented. He keeps it so fresh and so interesting," she added. "We've done like two songs so far, and we have so much fun in the studio."
Spears reportedly started dating Virginia native David Lucado in March. The romance came about two months after she called off her engagement to longtime love Jason Trawick. She has not opened up about Lucado.
Doctor Who star Matt Smith has said that he admires Ryan Gosling's body and thinks The Place Beyond the Pines actor is "handsome."
The 30-year-old British star, who plays the part of Bully in fantasy thriller How To Catch A Monster, which is Gosling's directorial debut, admitted that Gosling is a hunk.
Speaking to Total Film magazine, Smith said: ''[Do I have a man crush on him?] I would have no idea, but obviously I have admired his abdominals in Crazy Stupid Love. Yes, he's a very handsome man, that's for sure.''
Matt continued to lavish praise at the 32-year-old Hollywood star, who is dating Eva Mendes, adding: ''He's cool. He's bright, you know. He's got a really clear, really brilliant vision for his film. And I'm a huge fan of his work as an actor.
"I think he makes brilliant choices. I think it's important to work with people you're inspired by, and I absolutely was when I met him.''
